Ritchie Valens, one of the leading lights in the Chicano style of rock, was a Mexican-American musician whose music was heavily influenced by R&B and Latin flavors. He is also remembered for a more tragic reason - he was one of the three rock 'n' roll stars, along with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper, who died in a fateful plane crash in Iowa on February 3rd, 1959. This release marks the 60th anniversary of that fateful day, immortalized in Don McLean's 1971 hit "American Pie" as "The Day The Music Died".

At the young age of 17, Ritchie Valens had already achieved remarkable success, with three hits in the Top 100 at the time of the accident. This collection comprises all his releases through to 1962, including the A and B sides of his singles for the Del-Fi label and all the tracks from his two studio albums "Ritchie Valens" and "Ritchie", which were not otherwise on his singles. It also includes all the tracks from his album "In Concert At Pacoima Jr. High", which features live recordings from one of his performances, as well as unfinished demos with narrative by Bob Keane, the owner of the Del-Fi label.

Ritchie Valens' music is an evocative showcase of his young talent, which made a notable impact during his tragically brief career. The collection includes his No. 2 US hit "Donna" along with its famous hit B side "La Bamba", as well as his other hits "Come On, Let's Go", "That's My Little Suzie" and "Little Girl". His music, often sung in Spanish, blended R&B and Latin influences, creating a unique and distinctive Chicano style of rock.

The tragic loss of Ritchie Valens, alongside Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper, on that fateful day in 1959 has become a defining moment in the history of rock music. The lasting impact of his brief but influential career is a testament to the enduring power of his music and the legacy of a young talent taken too soon. This collection provides a comprehensive glimpse into the artistic output of Ritchie Valens, offering listeners the opportunity to explore and appreciate the breadth and depth of his musical contributions.
